The previous step showed how we examined techniques for sizing images  through cropping and shrinking using MS Paint.

adobe-reader-icon.gif PDF Download Compressing Images for a DotNetNuke site (69k). This lesson is a sample from the manual.

In this section we examine two techniques for compressing images before uploading to the website.

Option 1 - MS Paint

Once you are satisfied with the image use File ==> Save As option to save the image as jpg or jpeg file type. A simple technique for invoking the compression algorithm a second time is to open the file that you have just saved and save this again with a new name. Be aware that the image quality will deteriorate and you will need to apply your own judgement to decide whether the saving in file size compensates for the drop in quality.

Option 2 - Requires MS Office XP

The Picture Manager application comes standard with Office XP and recognised file types have the appropriate icon eg jpg file iconfor jpg file.

Click on the Edit Pictures icon Click on the Edit Pictures icon in the menu on the toolbar.

This will open the edit pop up menu on the right hand side of your screen.  Click on the Compress picture link.

Click on the Edit Pop up Menu on right side of screen

Now select the Web Pages radio button option. The estimated file sizes details will automatically display. Be aware that although the resulting files will be small and fast there will be a definite deterioration in image quality.
